How to Find Multiples of 18: A Fun Guide for Middle School Students!

Welcome to Mr. Ace Math, your go-to place for learning math in a fun and exciting way! Today, we are going to learn about finding multiples of 18. Multiples might sound tricky, but with a little practice, you’ll master them in no time. Let's dive in!

What Are Multiples?

middle school math students working together in a math classroom to solve math problems.

First, let's talk about what multiples are. A multiple of a number is what you get when you multiply that number by another whole number. For example, the multiples of 3 are 3, 6, 9, 12, and so on because 3 x 1 = 3, 3 x 2 = 6, 3 x 3 = 9, etc.

How to Find Multiples of 18

Finding the multiples of 18 is just as simple! You start with 18 and keep adding 18 to get the next multiple. Here are the first few multiples of 18:

  1. First multiple: 18 x 1 = 18

  2. Second multiple: 18 x 2 = 36

  3. Third multiple: 18 x 3 = 54

And you can keep going! See how easy it is?

Examples of Finding Multiples of 18

Let's look at some examples to make sure we really get it.

Example 1: Find the first five multiples of 18.

  • 18 x 1 = 18

  • 18 x 2 = 36

  • 18 x 3 = 54

  • 18 x 4 = 72

  • 18 x 5 = 90

So, the first five multiples of 18 are 18, 36, 54, 72, and 90.

Example 2: Find the multiple of 18 that comes after 90.

We know from the first example that 18 x 5 = 90. To find the next multiple, we add 18 to 90.

  • 90 + 18 = 108

So, the multiple of 18 that comes after 90 is 108.

Why Is This Important?

Understanding multiples helps in many areas of math, including finding the least common multiple (LCM). The LCM is the smallest number that is a multiple of two or more numbers. For example, to find the LCM of 18 and 24, you would list their multiples and find the smallest one they have in common.

Multiples of 18: 18, 36, 54, 72, 90, 108, 126, ...

Multiples of 24: 24, 48, 72, 96, 120, 144, ...

The LCM of 18 and 24 is 72 because it is the smallest number that appears in both lists.

Practice Makes Perfect!

The more you practice finding multiples, the better you’ll get at it. Try finding the multiples of other numbers too. Start with smaller numbers like 3, 5, or 7 and work your way up.
